As we’re still “starry-eyed” from the lavish weddings happening around the world, out of which many are getting global attention due to their stardom substantially happens to show us just how big the wedding and tourism business is. Grand weddings aren’t only for stars and millionaires. Everyone is well aware of the fact that Indian markets provide a wholesome segment for weddings and they are known to spend the most in their big fat Indian weddings where more than 10 million weddings are organised each year.
This recession-proof industry has a wide range of options to cater and is a good business alternative, altogether. Malaysia as a destination is keenly aware of the potential of this segment and has already dived in to explore more. Malaysia is trying to boost its tourism revenue through wedding tourism. Recently, Malaysia got in touch with 6 wedding planners from India and discussed widely what Malaysia has to offer. The top wedding planners were from Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi, specifically. Also invited were a wedding magazine journalist and a wedding photographer.
The trip comprised of inspecting the location in Malaysia and how it can be used for wedding tourism. The trip included hotel and site inspections in Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh to see the variety of accommodation options, facilities and services offered as well as nearby tourist attractions. The group also experience and learn about customs regulations and were introduced to Malaysian wedding planners, florists and caterers for a better approach. They also had the opportunity to speak with several government agencies namely the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Customs Department, Malaysian Immigrations
Department and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), as well as Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. Also, they met with the Tourism Malaysia Director-General, Datuk Seri Mirza Mohammad Taiyab and exchanges ideas and opinions on Malaysia’s potential as a wedding and honeymoon destination.
Further initiatives are said to be taken by Malaysian tourism to continue efforts on promoting the country as a wedding and honeymoon destination including the publication of promotional campaigns and materials for the Indian market. Roadshows with Air Asia in Indore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Delhi, Raipur and Amritsar, as well as additional familiarization trips are being conducted rigorously.
